Summer is all about relaxing, kicking back, and slowing things down. At least when we were kids. But as adults, and in this day and age, it seems that we're more attached to multi-tasking than anything else. Which is why I was so inspired by this article by AJ Jacobs (taken from his book) about unitasking. Doing one task at a time. Focused. Giving something your full attention. And I've noticed a trend in marketing. Maybe it's timing. But it seems right that things are shifting. Getting more personal. Take a look at how some of these companies are shortening the distance.
iphone commercials: face time
The music. The images. Babies, families, graduation, soldiers, and a deaf couple having a conversation. It doesn't get any better than that. And it's done so beautifully. This isn't about the texter at the seat next to you while you're trying to enjoy dinner. This is about being engaged and in the moment.
starbucks: reclaimed
While known for their hunter green mermaid logo, Starbucks is doing some amazing interior design with a few stores. This one won an award for using reclaimed barn wood. With comfort like this, will anybody leave?
anthropologie is organic
You don't even realize how they're using the latest technology on their website. Because you don't care. This is about creating an experience that is parallel to the brick and mortar store. Check out their catalog and how you can click on an image to get the details. This site doesn't scream "click here" or "download this." It's more of a quite sophistication, much like the store. It welcomes you to linger and get lost in the textiles and colors.
cookies
Two guys open a cookie place. Not cupcakes (as the trend seems to be wanning) or cakes that are more sculptural pieces of art than delicious. This is about cookies. And comfort. Done so well that it doesn't matter what they don't have it's about what they do.
